I have an AWESOME sister! Pat is 14 years older than I am and until her recent visit, we have never as "adults" really had more than 3 days to spend together. She spent 3 weeks with us this summer and we had an awesome time! Here are some photos of us in Nauvoo Last week. I wish we could have spent an additional 3 days because 2 days to see Nauvoo is just NOT long enough!
here we are on the Temple steps after we had just finished a Temple session.
Don't you just love this beehive photo?
Here we are at the Red Brick Store in the Sweltering heat!
This is the room where the Relief Society was formed. Words cannot describe the range of emotions I feel each time I am there.
And the AMAZING NAUVOO BRASS BAND- we just saw the last 2 songs of their last performance for the summer- boo hoo- they were AMAZING! WOW! What a talented bunch of young college kids!! WOWZA! They ride around in this horse drawn wagon and play the most awesome songs!!
We visited all the sites we could, and we stayed in the Zions Mercantile! We decided we will definately try to stay "there" every trip if possible! We shopped, we learned about Jesus Christ and the history of the Mass Exodus "FORCED" upon the Mormon people.
Here are some links to help you understand the history.

We attended "Rendevous", it's a musical by the Senior Missionaries about Nauvoo, we also attended the last theatrical performance of the College students called High Hopes and River Boats- WOW again! We learned to bake bread in a bustle oven, make a rag rug on an old wagon wheel frame, how to make candles, spin wool into yard, make pottery, rope and barrels in the family living center. We visited the Skovil Bakery and found out they had given out over 60,000 gingerbread cookies and had to bake an additional 20,000 to finish out the summer. We felt a gentle and strong spirit in the home of Brigham Young as well as a VERY strong spirit of good and a testament to us that the LDS Church is true throughout the entire town of Nauvoo. I am truly blessed to be able to share this experience with Pat as she had never been to Nauvoo before and I would go 4 times a year if I could! Well my friends that is just the readers digest version of our trip! lol
We took Pat to Carthage to the jail where Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith were MURDERED. It is always a very emotional point of the trip for me. The range of emotions I feel as I sit in the room where these Righteous men were murdered cannot be explained. As tears spill from my eyes and I listen to the story, remember the account from the Doctrine and Covenants, I thank God my Heavenly Father for their sacrifice for me! It only strengthens my testimony that this is the True Church of Jesus Christ on the earth today because if it were not, these saints would not have met with so much opposition, given their life, or endured so many persecutions or so much negativity all brought by Satan, who is the master of lies and deceipt. These people thought that by killing Joseph this church would cease to exist, what they were to ignorant to realize is that the church isn't about Joseph or any of our prophets, but it's all about Jesus Christ and God the Father and God will be sure his church continues to fill the earth. My heart is full of love and gratitude to the sacrifices of the pioneer saints!
here is an account:
Trouble for Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo began when the Nauvoo city council issued orders to destroy a newspaper press that had printed criticisms against the Church. This act angered the newspaper's supporters and neighboring citizens. Those in opposition rioted in the streets of Nauvoo in protest of the act. City council members, including the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum, were arrested for instigating a riot. To bring calm, Governor Thomas Ford promised the council members full protection if they would submit to arrest and go to Carthage for a trial. Notwithstanding the promise of protection, Joseph Smith felt that he was "going like a lamb to the slaughter."
The 16 council members arrived at Carthage on 24 June 1844. The next day they were released on bail, but Joseph and Hyrum Smith were detained after being falsely charged with treason, a charge stemming from their activating the Nauvoo Legion to protect the citizens of Nauvoo. Although only Joseph and Hyrum were under arrest, others remained with them in the jail.
On 27 June 1844, four men were held in the jail's upper bedroom: Joseph, Hyrum, John Taylor, and Dr. Willard Richards. They noticed a large group of men with disguised faces and guns rush toward the jail. The four men tried to hold the door against the mob, but Hyrum was immediately shot and killed. The mob forced the door open just as Joseph turned to leap out of the window, perhaps to distract attention from his friends. He was shot twice in the back and twice in the chest as he fell from the second-story window. John Taylor was shot four times but miraculously survived. Willard Richards escaped without even a hole in his clothing.
look at the shot hole in this door in the next photo- it happened when the door was closed
the top window in this photo is where Joseph fell out of after being shot/murdered in cold blood by the rioting gang. Who would give their life for anything or anyone unless they knew what they were doing to be true?

Here is a definate must read article on this very topic- be VERY sure to click the WATCH link on the top right column and see this for yourself! Truly inspiring!
