Protect your Credit Identity in Uncertain Times
By Carolyn Nicolaysen
During tough economic times identity theft becomes a bigger problem as thieves become more desperate and daring. Most of us know someone who has been a victim of this crime, and that it can take years to repair the problems it creates.
Today, there may be as many as 10 million victims of identity theft in the United States each year. On average, 30% of victims spend 4 to 6 months straightening out the problems caused by identity theft, and 23% spend at least 7 months. To avoid these problems requires that every member of the household take some basic precautions. Someone in the family must monitor credit security – probably you, because you are the person with the level of concern to read this article.
Here are some suggested measures:
1.Do not give out personal information over the phone or internet. Never send sensitive information in email messages. Reputable companies will never solicit you to give your social security number, driver’s license number, or credit card numbers by phone, unless you initiated the call and are asking for service.
2.Don’t carry your passport, social security card or birth certificate unless you have an immediate need to have them with you. When traveling abroad, carry them in a concealed money belt or lock them in a hotel safe.
3.Keep papers with personal information filed away and out of sight in your home. Make sure to take great care with these if you have roommates. This is a very important tip to share with your students who are away at a university. Many college students have roommates they do not know. They need to take great care to keep their personal information safe.
4.Regularly check your credit report with Equifax, Experian and/or Trans Union to be sure nothing unusual has been added to your report.
5.Make a list of credit cards and their numbers as well as your driver’s license and passport numbers. Keep these in a secure place in case you lose the originals. Be sure you have copied all the cards, front and back, that you carry in your wallet. You should send a copy of these to your out of area contact just in case you lose them to a fire or natural disaster.
6.Update your virus protection software often to prevent someone from accessing your computer. Keystroke tracking viruses can reveal to a hacker the passwords you use online, so it is very important that anti-virus and anti-malware programs are up-to-date.
7.Do not download anything sent to you by a stranger. When in doubt, send it to the trash or spam folder on your computer. Most of us have seen examples of spoofing and phishing in the spam messages we receive, but if you don’t know these terms you should learn what they are and how to recognize these online tactics.
8.Use a firewall on your PC, and protect your home wireless network from strangers logging in.
9.Don’t store vital information on your laptop. Do not allow your PC to memorize your passwords for your convenience – memorize them yourself and enter them manually. Use an encrypted program like Keeper (Free for mobile devices like iPhone) to store passwords. Otherwise, do not store them on your computer or mobile device. Change your passwords frequently.
10.Use passwords that are a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers to make them more difficult to hack into. Never use your mother’s maiden name or your birthday, children’s birth dates or anything else that would be easy for a thief to know or discover.
11.Log off when you are finished for the day.
12.Delete all personal information before you dispose of a computer. That means either physically destroying the hard drive (with a hammer) - or if the computer is sold or given away, doing a secure re-format of the drive that thoroughly destroys and erases the data so that it would be impossible to recover it. FDISK and FORMAT utilities are not enough, so you should use a program utility like KillDisk (Free version) to erase the drive and destroy the data.
13.Ask about data security measures at work. Make sure they provide firewalls and viru
s detection software. Of course, you would not leave any of your personal identity info (passwords, finances, SS number, etc) on a workplace computer.
14.Read privacy policies carefully on websites you use for personal finance – banking, investing, credit card management, and retail purchases. Always be sure when buying online with your credit card that the website is encrypted where you checkout, or use PayPal if it is offered.
15.If a company you want to do business with (insurance company for example) asks for your social security number, ask them if you can substitute another number such as your driver’s license.
16.Keep your wallet and/or purse safe at work, church, parent club meetings, and in the grocery store. When I do my grocery shopping I either take a purse that is like a small backpack and wear it, or I secure the straps to the cart so it is more difficult to steal.
17.The next time you order checks, have only your first and middle name initials printed on them. If someone takes your checkbook, they will not know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name, but your bank will know.
Please share this information with everyone you know and help stop identity theft and fruad!

I love giving little holiday gifts to people and for this holiday here is what I have created:
Here are the first 6 of about 25 that I am making today. I love giving out these little gifts to the teller at the store or the bank, the gal behind the counter when we pay for gas, the people Kay works with, and saying "thank you" because I really do appreciate what they do for our community and their friendliness to me.
I used the Two Tags die and Big Shot and cut all my tags and folded them and slipped the tab under the cut tab that comes with it (see photo below) . I cut the 1/2" x 2 3/4" inch strip of Razzle Berry designer paper and punched out the so saffron with the modern label punch. I stamped the bunny from the Spring Floral Acrylic Mount stamp set on whisper white cardstock and punched it out with the 1 inch SU! Punch (this is what makes this project so quick I didn't have much hand work! I used snail adhesive to attach them all to the tag and slipped in without opening this tag a hersheys mr good bar tiny size with a bit of snail on it to keep it from falling out. I pressed the sides together and TA DAH! DONE!
See the "chocolate candy bar inside"? yummo! What a fun and easy quick treat! How fun would these be on your Easter Dinner plates for your family and guests?
Hope your day is awesome and productive, We have sunshine but it's not all that warm yet! 2 Days till Ray and Jack are here!! Woo hoooo! I called Ray yesterday and asked him if

I love this book, I love the designer papers and I love, love, love, the flowers I added to the top of the book!
I am in the process of creating a Tutorial Cd for this and many other projects.
I used # 177160 Shades of Spring Designer paper- Stampin Up! of course! I also used lavender lace and certainly celery cardstocks with satin white ribbon. The flowers on the top are from a craft store. It is a VERY large book and will be wonderful filled with Easter photos and journaling!
Have a great day everyone. I am almost ready to choose a random comment winner so get your comments posted!

Over at Soul Scrappers we have all kinds of challenges going on, I created this page for the SC6 Sketch Challenge. It turned out pretty well! It was fun to sit with my scrapbooking pals last night at Friday night crop and create my own project/page!
Remember that you can click on the photo to see it larger. I had so much fun creating this page for the Soul Scrappers Sc6 Sketch Challenge. Each piece of cardstock is either sewn on my machine or hand hole punched to look sewn. This photo is from when I lived in Washington state you can See Mt Adams in the background- that is 15 miles behind me. I wish I were that thin again! this photo was taken at least 16 years ago. Gosh wow that is a long time and a past life! lol This is going in my about me book and thanks to the Soul Scrappers site, I am creating one!
The flowers are a SU punch # 118073 Extra Large Fancy Flower, with a retired SU rub on flower on top and then the SU button tied with vanilla crochet thread.
The lettering was made using my cricut and after cutting the letters I ran them through my smallest Xyron. I have all 4 sizes of Xyron (2 were gifts and one I got in a trade and the other I purchased) they are life savers for projects like this!! The more mustard scallop edge was made with More Mustard cardstock from SU and our Scallop Edge punch. The papers are from a stack called: Material Girl & Garden Variety, the red layer is Real Red c/s from SU and the greens are Old Olive and Always Artichoke. This was a very fun page to create!
We are off to shop for a PROM DRESS for miss Katie today! Wish us luck (or should I ask for prayers?) that we will find a gorgeous dress that we can "afford"!!
Have a great day and don't forget to leave comments our random blog rewards prize time is coming up soon soon soon! OH MY, The wind is ferocious out right now- pooey on the weather!
