Rumors that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints still practice polygamy are not true

 

A study commissioned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in 1994, revealed misconceptions the public has about the Church. Topping the list was the assertion that “many people” still believe the LDS Mainstream Church practices polygamy. ( I see that here in Missouri- my first thought?  Oh MY GOSH people, get out of the dark ages and get correct information!)

In 2008, we see these issues are still at the forefront of the national discussion on Mormonism in the United States . Romney has suspended his campaign and that might quiet the discussion for a while, but the effects of the spotlight on our faith will have a lasting affect for some time.

Of the top issues being raised, members and church leaders comfortably address the polygamy issue with correct information. The practice has been discontinued for more than 100 years, and no member of the Church practices polygamy. It's an old issue, not a current practice, and so not relevant to Latter-day Saints. Likewise, questions about whether Mormons are Christian are also addressed with information.

 

I would like to add-  no member of the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints practces polygamy". If they  are found in violation of this law they are excommunicated from the church. 

 What people who have been excommunicated choose to do (offshoots that "call" themselves Mormons- like the sect living in Texas that is in the news) have nothing to do with the Main LDS church and should never be grouped as such.

I saddens me to see people still live in ignorance and believe lies they "hear" instead of finding out the truth or assuming they do know just because someone calls themself a Mormon doesnt mean they are living by the laws of the TRUE church.

For those of you emailing me calling me a liar and accusing me of all kinds of things- Let me ask you-: ARE YOU a member of my church? Do YOU really know our laws and do you have the right to chastise me about what I do know to be true or are you only going by what you see or someone has told you?  what proof do you have to offer that your facts are right?

Please refrain until you have correct info about the people you are telling me about.  I KNOW for a fact that mainstream members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints are not "allowed" by the church or by governmental laws to practice polygamy. They are excommunicated-  that is why there are so many off shoots and sects "calling" themselves Mormons but are NOT members of the main church.

Hi Gwen,

I read your blog about LDS. I can't believe that people are actually giving you grief about this. I agree with you, get the facts people, before you judge another. I have a dear friend who says:"When you point a finger, there are 3 more pointing right back at you."
I am not a LDS,I am a Christian,Baptist, but think that people should be informed b-4 making any judgement.
